The Fate of the Fete
It is with a sense of inevitability and sadness that the Bury Fete Committee has made the decision that there can be no Bury Fete this year. We have waited for as long as possible to make this decision, as we had hoped the lockdown might be over well before the end of July. But the Government have said that by July, at the earliest, we may hope to ease the lockdown in the hospitality industry, if considered safe to do so. That is far too uncertain for us to consider that we could definitely have a large gathering by the end of that month.
There have been several strands to making our decision. Paramount was the health, safety and well being of both the helpers and our visitors. We cannot justify the possibility that our gathering might jeopardise the safety of a single person. Then we have looked at what organizations like Chichester Festival Theatre are doing, who have large gatherings of people, and they have cancelled their entire programme to the end of the year.
Dorset House School have been so generous to us for many years, giving us the use of the grounds of the school to hold the Fete, and so many of you have given your time and talents to make the Fete so successful in past years. It takes a great deal of advance planning, and help from you all, to organise and stage the Fete, and the closer we get to the date the less time we have to do this planning and organising. In addition we have heard from some of our regular contributors that they will be unable to come this year because of the Covid-19 restrictions, and we wish them well and safe.
We have every intention of putting the Fete on in 2021, so save the date, Saturday 31st July 2021! We look forward to working with you all again, and to welcoming our many friends and their families to what has become an integral part of church and village life, and the wider community.
